I've had a bumper crop of tomatoes this season. As a consequence, my cupboards are filled with jars of pasatta and stewed tomatoes, my freezer is full of frozen tomatoes for sauce-making later and tomato salads are featuring prominently on my menus.



I have no more room for tomatoes in my house and there are still a few left to pick in my veggie garden. Luckily, I know of a robust 'share economy' organisation known as Grow Free.

Grow Free started a few years ago at the initiative of a Fleurieu local named Andrew Barker. Andrew holds the belief that food should be grown locally, it should be organic and it should be free. He works tirelessly to put this belief into action by raising organic, heirloom flower and vegetable seedlings which he then gives away, for free, to other locals who want to get their garden started.

Those who end up with too many tomatoes (or lemons, herbs, stone fruit, spinach etc) can place their surplus on one of five sharing carts. There are two sharing carts in Victor Harbor and one each in the nearby towns of Goolwa, Yankalilla and Strathalbyn.



Locals in each town can drop off their surplus and take someone else's. In fact they don't even need to leave anything, they are welcome just to take. For free.

In fact, the homespun sign on my local sharing cart says 'take what you need, give what you can'.



If you are lucky enough to live on the Fleurieu, you can use the carts and share the love. If not, maybe your community might benefit from a similar project.
