The cafe scene has been picking up in Moe in recent years. While it's no longer true that you can't get a decent coffee, there are times when you're not assured of a great one. My search for this ever-elusive Latrobe Valley creature ended when I tried Groovy Tuesdays.

Groovy Tuesdays sits like a beauty queen in a toad costume on Kirk Street. The building housed a Chinese restaurant once upon a time, the traces of which remain in the pointed arch windows which sit along one wall. While the owners can't do anything about the oddly shaped windows they have done everything they can to improve the interior. Walking through the door is like walking through some kind of magic portal, one that transports you to a suburb of Melbourne where the décor is sparse and relaxing. These guys have achieved the right mix with their atmosphere, a nice combination of chilled and tasteful.

Despite these indicators, I confess I didn't trust their coffee machine the first time I tried it. It was early morning, and I needed to know that my coffee was going to be drinkable. I committed the sin of ordering flavoured syrup. I got the coffee I wanted.

Next time I was more brave. This was a sit-in occasion and I went crazy and got a mug of latte. I'm pretty sure I had a surprised expression on my face when I realised that on top of being a relaxing place to sit, Groovy Tuesdays had mastered decent coffee.

Hospitality in the Valley is almost always friendly, and the staff at Tuesdays are welcoming. The layout of the cafe ensures that there are plenty of nooks to sit in if you want some privacy, and also plenty of more open tables. It's a incredibly smart use of the space.

The food is basic but good. I ventured a cookie, unable to resist a shortbread frog's pleading eyes. My dining companion was a little nonplussed by the purchase.'Is that for your child?''No. It's for me.'I'm pretty sure I embarrassed them a little by devouring the little creature while I was with them, but no matter. It was a sweet treat, and if it wasn't particularly impressive it was at least entertaining. I didn't order anything further but the other food emerging from the kitchen seemed to be at that basic level.

In brief, Groovy Tuesdays was a great find. It's one of the few places in the valley I've found truly relaxing. Groovy.
