Groove Therapy is throwing an all-encompassing day of breakdance and hip-hop workshops for kids aged 8 to 11 years on Monday 23rd January at 107 Projects in Redfern. No dance experience necessary.
This exciting workshop involves physical movement, teamwork, creativity, expression and problem-solving through (clean) hip-hop and break dancing.
This extracurricular activity has a great local community vibe and offers a safe space for kids to develop physically, cognitively and emotionally. Plus it's hip hop, which has street cred to young peeps!
Groove Therapy's Director Vanessa Marian is an advocate for mental wellness, getting off our screens and into our bodies.
"There is a growing disparity between the time kids spend indoors wired to technology and the time spent engaging in physical activity. Let's change this" Ms Marian says.
The day includes a series of structured workshops that begin with hip-hop grooves and a break dance foundation. The second half of the day is the team component where kids learn choreography techniques in groups to create their own dance.
At the conclusion of the workshops, parents are invited to come in and watch a short showcase that the kids have been busy preparing all day.
Known for their community projects with refugee girls and early dementia patients, Groove Therapy have been running sell-out adult dance classes in Sydney and Melbourne, and now the gang are bringing their grooves to kids!
The all-inclusive fee is $65 per child.

"There's no stressing about getting the moves right or looking like Beyonce — they're too busy making sure you're having a damn fine time." - Concrete Playground
"Spending time with Vanessa Marian is to be reminded that passion and grit are a powerful combination. While most of us sit around complaining that the world isn't a better place when it should be, Vanessa is already out there making changes." - Catalogue Magazine
