Did you ever wonder what happens to old greyhounds? It seems they are not put out to pasture like old horses. Once they are deemed past their 'use by date' They are euthanased!
Greyhounds have to be in top condition for racing so aging, slowing down, injuries will render them unfit to race. Old age for a greyhound is 4 or 5 years!
How can you resist?
Surprisingly these dogs are quite laid back and don't require a lot of exercise. I'd imagined having to take them on long daily runs. Apparently they are quite happy to lay about and sleep. Now that's my kind of dog!!
They are also very affectionate, gentle and make great companions. A charity was set up in 2012 to rescue and rehome these gentle giants.
Greyhounds New Beginnings - Life After the Track is run by volunteers who saved and rehoused almost 60 dogs last year.
Sounds like a fun day even if you just want to look. All photos from Facebook page.
Coming up is 'Greyhound Adoption Day' is at the Petbarn store at Cleveland on Saturday May 3rd and Sunday May 4th.
If you think you might be interested, here is an opportunity for you to meet some available dogs and to talk to some people who have adopted greyhounds.
Remember: Adoption is for life! If you cannot commit to a dog for the entirety of its life, then help by donating blankets or buying a ticket in the raffle. Returning a dog to a rescue group is very stressful on the dog and humans. These beautiful dogs that have already been through enough.
Being rather thin, greyhounds need blankets and coats.
Fundraising will be by means of a Sausage Sizzle and a raffle.
Donations of blankets, doonas and fabric for dog coats are always welcome.
Look up their Facebook site for some fabulous photos.
