The highlight and surprise of Grey Street was the sighting of a giraffe peering over a high fence.


Grey Street starts at Mt. Dandenong Road and runs for 800 metres until it becomes Cheong Street.


On the Mt. Dandenong Road corner is the Maroondah Hospital. The first two hundred metres are taken up with the hospital and the opposite side are many private medical suites and clinics. Most had a small low maintenance garden with shrubs rather than flowers. Two seen were many corkscrew rushes and a couple of broomstick bromeliads.




There were also many dandelions. They seem to pop up uninvited in many gardens, but they do look nice when closely inspected.


Autumn had just started; some leaves had started to turn, and some new growth on a tree trunk stood out.


Once past the medical precincts, Grey Street becomes a well-established residential street, with a mixture of old and new houses. Some have picket fences.


Not many flowers were seen on this walk, only a superb specimen of a banksia and a red bottle brush.




Birds almost outnumbered flowers on this walk. A couple of magpies shared a power pole, and a raven had a mouthful of something.


A crested pigeon spent a long time perched on overhead wires, so was easy to capture photographically.


A noisy miner was vigorously feeding in a gum tree. Their antics are a delight to watch when they are not chasing other birds.


One pea-like flowering bush defied my identification programme. Another garden had a garden bed surrounding a tree and would look delightful when the plants flowered.




Many walkers were about, enjoying the leafy green surroundings.


I was barked at by several dogs but only saw one.


Giraffe? It was a life-sized one in an early learning centre. I'm sure the children soon learnt how tall a giraffe was.


Grey Street has footpaths on both sides but is a little steep towards the Cheong Street end.
