The gloves are off - will McLaren Vale win once again?
You might be forgiven for confusing the Edinburgh Hotel in Mitcham with the Edinburgh Castle in Currie St, Adelaide City. Both pubs are well-known venues for live music, but The Edinburgh Hotel is also famous for its fine cuisine, its gardens overlooked by a vine-covered verandah, and its premium wine cellar. It's also a great place for wedding receptions.

Mitcham is a pleasant leafy suburb, bordering the Adelaide Hills, and the heritage-listed hotel is an ideal setting for the Grenache Cup, which is being held at the Edinburgh Hotel this Saturday, September 21. McLaren Vale's winemakers will be out to defend their title for the third year running. Wine lovers are invited to join the giant tasting, which is always held around the same day as the official International Grenache Day, and to cast their votes in the traditional McLaren Vale versus Barossa clash.
The Grenache Cup was established in 2011, in celebration of International Grenache Day (September 23). The serious purpose behind the international event was to not only encourage people to discover Grenache, but also to protect ancient Grenache vineyards from being taken over by more commercial varieties.
On the day there will be a selection of Spanish Grenaches available to try, as well as the contenders for The Grenache Cup. Contestants thus far are; Yelland & Papps, Yalumba, Head Wines, Kalleske, Torbreck, Turkey Flat Vineyards, Langmeil Winery, Teusner, Cirillo Wines, Tim Smith, Chapel Hill, Wirra Wirra, Rudderless, Samuels Gorge, Yangarra, d'Arenberg, Angoves, SC Pannell, and Maxwell Wines.
If you can't get there this weekend, or if your appetite has been whetted for more tastings,The Ed has lined up more than 20 tasting events between now and Christmas, starting with The Ardbeg and Glenmorangie whisky masterclass, on Thursday 26th September from 6 -7.30pm
