Adelaide has so many great experiences to enjoy, some of them well kept secrets. I write about how you can Live Like a Local.

A riot of colour in our landscapes
Down in the Fleurieu we are pretty lucky if we are a bit "arty". So many great artists to choose from. If you want to come and join us for a day out or weekend make sure you stop and take in some of the fantastic art. Driving through Mt Compass you will find Green Tank Gallery Studio a few minutes out of town toward Victor Harbor. Funny name: I will let you work out for yourself where the name comes from.
John Lacey at his Green Tank Gallery Studio
John Lacey is an award winning artist who weaves his magic with brushes, knives and his distinct palette to make our Australian landscapes take on a mystical beauty of their own. Squint your eyes a bit and you might see the world the same way John does.
Captivating Australian Landscapes
John takes scenes that we all recognise and makes them glow and shimmer. Do you recognise that hot hazy summer day at Port Willunga Beach he has captured perfectly. That rusty old shed on a local homestead. Or the vineyards of McLaren Vale through the changing seasons. Pruners in autumn, the lushness of summer growth or the vibrant reds of the region. The shimmering reflections of waterways and boats at Goolwa.
Familar scenes as you havent seen them before
If you have the chance to watch John give a demonstration you will want to sign up for his tuition as he makes it look so easy to transform that blank canvas in to a thing of beauty. A palette knife, paint, canvas, a stroke here, a flick over there and 20 minutes later a miniature painting emerges.
Colours of Australia
John also paints the West Australian Pilbara landscape. If you have been there you will be transported back by his paintings that show the jewel like colours that are hard to imagine are real.
We all know that SALA celebrates the hundreds of artists in South Australia and is on throughout August. John has an exhibition showing for this called Another Look. He is very happy to spend time chatting with visitors to his Gallery Studio. So tell him you found him on Weekend Notes.
Self Portrait and Another Look exhibition for SALA 2014
A wander through John's studio will leave you wondering if he ever has time to sleep. The amount of work he produces is staggering.
Studio - tools of the artist
If you haven't painted since kindergarten don't worry, get out the paints, go to a workshop and have a go. You never know you may be exhibiting in SALA yourself in the future.
