On the last Friday of the month, at the top of a flight of stairs at the Galiec club in Surry Hills, lives Green Lights Comedy Nights where you can catch a bunch of great acts for a fiver.

The room started up in April last year and is run by two Sydney comedians. I've only made it to a couple of shows but end up kicking myself over the ones that I've missed because the line-up is always impressive.

The first one I went to was earlier this year, it was headlined by Cam Knight. (You'd normally pay about $20 to see one of his solo shows).

It was around the time of Sydney comedy festival where Cam was doing his show '100 Percenter' and all the other acts on the night were also doing shows as part of com-fest.

(Sam Campbell, Andrew Hastings,Jen Carnovale, Seaton Kay-Smith, Alex Wasiel and Neel Kolhatkar) and it was still $5!

I spoke to Alexei about what sets their night apart from other nights in Sydney and he had this to say;
"I'd say the thing that makes it different from other nights is that it is totally curated, We only put on people we've seen and loved. And there's always just a super warm and positive vibe to the whole show."

I definitely felt the same.

The vibes there are great, the staff are awesome and there is a courtyard area where you can hang out before it all starts; plus loads of seating inside so you won't get stuck standing up the whole time.

The show usually starts around 8 but the bar is open earlier so there's often a fair few people there before.

It kicks on after there too, the bar is open until late.

The comics that have performed there all had really nice things to say too;"It has the highest elevation by far in the city. But the lack of oxygen makes for big laughs and people passing out with joy... It's a great breeding ground for experimenting from new and established comics alike."

- Cam Knight

"Performing at Green Lights is like getting a big warm hug from an old friend. It's large but still feels cosy, everyone's primed to have a good time and there's that air of fun that sometimes sees magic happen"

-Alex Wasiel

%%"Green Lights is a great comedy night. With professional head-liners and the best in undiscovered comedy talent for just $5 you can see the future of stand up in Australia.
Also the drinks are super cheap so if I don't make you laugh you can at least get real drunk... but I will make you laugh... I hope.... god I've got self esteem issues... why doesn't my dad love me?"%%

-Chris Leben (writer/producer of these masterpieces with Lee Lin Chin:

The next Green Lights is this Friday (The 29th of August) and again it's an incredible line-up.

The head-liner is the always-inappropriate, Nick Sun (the guy has supported Chris Rock on tour!)

Other acts include:

Alice Fraser
Matty B
Henry Stone
Alistair Bates
Jen Carnovale
Tom Cashman
Nathan Lentern

...and somehow it is still $5

Here's a video preview of what you are in for with Nick Sun (Language warning)
