I generally avoid buffets because I hate the idea of paying for food you won't end up eating. The average price of $40 seems silly when I doubt I even pick up $10 worth of food. That's why on a recent night out I was thrilled to find a restaurant that lets you pay for exactly what you eat.

Green Gourmet in Newtown gives you many options when it comes to dining. You can choose to order a single meal from their menu, get together in a group and order a banquet, or you can go to the back wall, and help yourself to the buffet – at a charge of $2.60 per 100gm of food. I filled my plate twice, at a total cost of $10.40. The buffet is vegetarian with many vegan options, however, there are so many foods here that meat eaters will love. My personal recommendations are the tofu slices, steamed dumplings, and the potato curry. The buffet boasts a nice variety of fried and steamed foods, suiting both the health and the taste-conscious.

The highlight of the evening was choosing dessert. Next door to the main restaurant is the cake and ice-cream shop, with a range of vegan cakes and ice creams that are to die for, such as the raspberry cheesecake and the macadamia brownie. The desserts are a little more expensive, averaging $8.00 for a slice of cake, and $3.40 for a scoop of ice cream, but, at the end of the night, we had had a scrumptious three-course meal for just under $20.00.

Now, that's my idea of gourmet!
