Ordinarily, one would question whether writing a review about a gym would be an interesting topic for readers. The Green Apple Wellness Centre is a lot more than your ordinary gym. It is a centre for wellbeing for older people who are wanting to exercise and partake in classes without feeling intimidated by the younger hip crowd. It's a gym where there is no pressure. Instead, you will meet supportive happy staff who encourage and inspire you on your fitness journey. You can't get better than that! Oh, and having been in the wellness business for 37 years, that kind of says it all really!
As you walk into the centre it looks like any other gym, until you turn the corner and suddenly everything opens up into the great outdoors. You literally are working out undercover for those rainy days, but with the roller doors up high so you can enjoy the scenery and fresh air. This is one reason I've turned away from some gyms in the past - the brand new smell of carpet was off putting. This is innovative and I love seeing the greenery and feeling like your outside, not cooped up.
The Green Apple Wellness Centre has been in business for 37 years and in that time has evolved into what it is today, a place to feel safe and nurtured, welcomed and without loud music blasting you away. Instead, you can enjoy the serenity. I noticed a chair lift for those who were unable to manage stairs and wanted to join in the group classes. Strength training is so important for our bodies, especially as we age to avoid muscle loss, increase muscle mass, improve bone mineral density, reduce lower back pain as well as improve glucose metabolism. And who doesn't want to reduce body fat!
There's a hydrotherapy pool where in summer, aqua aerobics is held and this centre holds regular film nights where everybody is invited to bring a plate of food to share for supper and the $10 fee goes towards charity. They also hold a yearly fundraiser - the 'Bayside to Bald Hills' fun run, (walk or cycle) with proceeds going to Camp Quality. And of course, a fair is in full swing afterwards in the main street of Bald Hills. This year it is on the 12 July. It doubles an open day, so you can come along and have a look for yourself.
The Green Apple Wellness Centre offer supervised strength programs, yoga, pilates, zumba and so much more. Check their website for further information. You deserve this gift to yourself. And, there is a weekly morning cuppa for seniors offered each Friday, to socialise and make new friends.
The Wellness Centre also offers various courses to further help you in your new lifestyle fitness journey such as Heal Nutrition - a motivational course to help you make changes by analysing your diet. As well as a:
Diabetes education course, eligible with Medicare
Pilates for back pain course, which helps overcome and heal muscle strain and injury
Heart works exercise program that was developed by the Heart Foundation
Lung in Action course which aims to extend benefits for those who have chronic disease. Green Apple Wellness Centre is for those of us who are interested in taking a step towards a healthier future.
As I have already said, this is no ordinary gym so if you have been 'umming and ahhing' about your fitness levels, why not give the Green Apple a try? There are no joining or exiting fees. Just your initial three sessions as the Personal Trainers begin to map out a programme to suit your needs. And, if you have a private health fund, this covers the sessions anyway. Enjoy.
I joined this gym 4 months ago after being diagnosed with Diabetes and needed to lose weight and change my diet for a better life. The staff there are supportive and so very friendly. Since joining I have lost 60 cms and 3 dress sizes and now my daughter Cassie who is 16 and recovering from spinal surgery has joined up as well as they have Exercise Physiologists and one of them is also a Physiotherapist so they were able to write up a program for her. Customer service with a smile is rare these days but everyone on staff there great you by name and with a smile and words of encouragement. Would recommend this facility for anyone no matter their fitness level. Leanne Shields
