I got a woman, mean as she can be. Sometimes I think she's almost meaner than me". In August, Rocklea Showgrounds will reverse time to an era when Elvis was young and hot and didn't wear ugly white jump suits with diamantes. It all revolves around the hot rods but what revolves is tantalising. The hot rods are competing and they are broken down into several sections such as 'rat rods' 'muscle', 'bobbers' and 'pre 1970'.
My mother and stepfather in Dalby each drive a mint or a gold Ford Fairlane from the sixties. My step dad keeps those cars alive. Twenty years ago around Dalby I used to lie hiding in the back seat in shame. But now that those cars are classics, I sit in the front in vintage sunglasses. They attract hoons like fleas and at every red light Mum is challenged. She slams the pedal and always wins. Hers is a V8. That helps.
If you have any, attend the show in Rockabilly gear which for girls can be quite gorgeous. Look at the style on Google then, jump on eBay or dash to a charity store. You can do it and it's a dress you can wear again. The men and boys are unfailingly dressed the same with greased hair and I don't know how any one individual manages to stand out. They know how to lean on a bonnet or fence or stand one boot on a fender just fine and watch a pretty, little lady go by.
The event is kept rocking by as series of bands capturing the sounds of the era. Featuring at the gig, all the way from Nashville, Tennessee is the Planet Rockers. Now Elvis was from Memphis, Tennessee. He moved there at age thirteen. It seems to be kept quiet that he was actually from Mississippi, Flicking through some images of him, he was truly one smoking hot package with an incredible voice and ability to move and dance although untrained. He was okay on guitar. He never won an Oscar and should have been kept out of Hollywood. The drama and delivery skills were not there but he had some strengths. One of his songs has a line about me: "She's a complicated lady..." I have danced a choreographed 'Jail House Rock' in hot pants and white boots. The Planet Rockers have a guitarist to lust after. Because their guitars are over sized, I cant tell if he's bass, rhythm or lead.
There are other bands such as The Convertibles with a buff drummer and the Whiteliners. They are from Sydney's inner west where there are brothels, pimps, bikers, random drive by shootings and regular murders of innocent sex workers. Clap them. Do not boo or call insults. These guys will have connections and street skills and you don't want to wind up dead under a hot rod.
There is an art show: painted vintage car doors- just the thing for the lounge wall. There are fashion shows. They'll show you what to wear and how to wear it. There are 150 market stalls selling Rockabilly things such as automobilia and hair grease. This is a good place to pick up a new pair of vintage sunglasses.
If you like cars and you like them hot like I do, this is your scene. If you hang around until they all leave, it's the intro of Bat out of Hell times ten thousand. It gets you in the guts. Tickets go on sale in May. What will you be wearing to the Greaze Fest?
