Race against this old Puffing Billy train
Have you ever wanted to do something that is out of the ordinary? Now is your chance with this event - read on.

The Dandenong Ranges' Puffing Billy train is one of those attractions that I would say is a must visit tourist attraction in the Dandenong Ranges.

Now there is a Great Train Race and this is not just a race amongst the competitors - it is an exciting challenge wherein you compete against the steam locomotive, Puffing Billy!

Perhaps you are a fitness fanatic? If so, this is a fabulous way to explore this interesting region by taking part in the Great Train Race against Puffing Billy.

The Great Train Race is one of the very popular events on the Dandenong Ranges calendar and it is also one of the longest running fun runs put on throughout Australia.

The Great Train Race is not just a regular running race. It is a race that will challenges participants to race against the historic Puffing Billy train. This will occur along a 13.5km path through the beautiful landscape of the Dandenong Ranges!

When racing, entrants will find it is a hilly route which takes them over roads, dirt tracks and trails. The start of this exciting challenge will be from the Belgrave train station and then on through to the lovely Emerald lake.

Each year, the number of competitors is increasing and this is due to the event's always increasing popularity. Last year, they had as many as 3,000 runners.

The race will be held on Sunday 5th May 2019 with the start being at 9.30 am and the finish at 11.30 am. Runners will have a maximum of 120 minutes or 2 hours to complete the race. You must be aged 13 years or over to enter into this race. To register for the race, click on this link.

This is also a great event for spectators with the best places to view the race being:

On the west side of Belgrave-Gembrook Road. You will need to get there from 8.45 am to 9.45 am (at the start line)
Trestle Bridge carpark (1.5km)
Emerald Railyard (drinks stand and parking available) (10km)
Emerald Lake Park (ELP) along the final 1km of the route
And the finish line (12.5km-13.5km)

The Great Train Race is run by Puffing Billy's railway volunteers who organise this event each year.

This train started running in the year 1900 and Puffing Billy is a genuine relic of when life was slower. It is a historic steam train that still runs regularly in the mountain district it was built to run in. Puffing Billy is now a major tourist attraction and it is operated by almost 900 enthusiastic volunteers.

The railway is the major survivor of four experimental lines used to develop rural areas in the early 1900s.

Puffing Billy Railway is now a major tourist attraction and operates every day except Christmas Day. Puffing Billy Railway is a not-for-profit organisation.

Check out their Facebook page for more information on the event.
