Escape the hustle and bustle of Melbourne City with an indulgent Great Ocean Road Cooking Class and Lodge Retreat experience.
Chef Ha Nguyen of Richmond based cooking school OTAO Kitchen is launching a series of overnight and multi-day cooking retreats on Victoria's Great Ocean Road this Winter.
Running on selected weekends from the 6th June 2015, this unique experience sees guests relax in the utmost comfort at the exclusive Twelve Apostles Lodge Walk, whilst also enjoying two exciting cooking classes.
"Returning to the Lodge in winter is a bit like coming home for me. It has been a special place for me in Australia and I am delighted to share both the lodge and my love of cooking on my new retreats," explains Chef Nguyen.
Under Chef Nguyen's guidance, guests will have the rare opportunity to cook and sample the finest regional food and produce from local farmers, fishermen and artisan producers.
The experience begins with guests making their own way to the Johanna-based lodge, where they will meet and greet over afternoon tea. Then it is off to the dining room, with floor to ceiling glass windows looking out to the garden and a backdrop of native forest. Expect to see wallabies grazing on site then hopping on by!
Under the instruction of Chef Ha, the group will create a sumptuous 5 course dinner menu using local produce, meats and ingredients.
The class consists of hands-on cooking, some demonstration and learning of the skills and techniques required for each dish. Class sizes are intimately designed with a maximum of 10 guests, ensuring a personalised cooking experience with Chef Nguyen and the opportunity to gain valuable cooking tips and secrets.
Guests will then enjoy the spoils of their creations accompanied by local wines, great company and good cheer in the dining room.
On the second day of the retreat, guests will be encouraged sleep in and enjoy the tranquil sounds of wildlife and views of the forest from the private cabins.
The group will then come together can create a series of fresh dishes for a Yum Cha style brunch.
After brunch, guests are free to explore a diverse range of local attractions at their leisure on the way home, including Apollo Bay, Otway Lighthouse and Koalas, Waterfall and Tree Top Walk, Twelve Apostles and Port Campbell, The Great Ocean Walk, Gorge Chocolates, Apostle Whey Cheese and Timboon Vodka & Ice Cream.
Accommodation is at the exclusive lodge owned by Twelve Apostles Lodge Walk, normally only open to their walkers. "My relationship with owners Dana and Gavin Ronan allows me to offer this cooking retreat exclusively through OTAO Kitchen," enthuses Ha Nguyen. "These classes are suitable for anyone with an interest in Asian fusion cooking, wanting one-on-one tuition, with a bit of Great Ocean Road sightseeing as a bonus."
This package starts from $435 pp and includes an overnight stay in 4 star lodge accommodation, two hands-on cooking classes, wine and cheese tastings and more.
The classes operate on most Fridays and Saturdays between June and August. There is a maximum of ten people in each class.
