The Great Cocky Count is an annual survey of Black-Cockatoo numbers across Western Australia.

The focus in on the endangered Carnaby's Black-Cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus latirostris), but the vulnerable Baudin's Black-Cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus baudinii) and Forest Red-Tailed Black-Cockatoo (Calyptorhynchus banksii naso) are also counted.

On April 3rd 2016, at sunset, you can play your part as a citizen scientist to help gain a better understanding of these unique and endangered species. Volunteers will monitor known roost sites and count black-cockatoos as they come in to their evening roosts.

Carnaby's are fascinating birds that mate for life, have long-term parental care and are semi-migratory. They can usually be found in Perth during summer and autumn, before they move into the wheatbelt in winter in search of tree hollows suitable for breeding.

The data collected so far has provided a useful snapshot over time of the changing population. If current trends continue the population of Carnaby's will halve in five years.

Last year was the biggest Cocky Count to date, with over 600 volunteers surveying over 300 sites. Will you take part this year?

Registrations to participate in the Great Cocky Count close on the 20th of March and must be made online to BirdLife Western Australia. The registration form is available on their website .
