Have you ever fancied camping, but never got around to it? Do you want to go camping but are not sure how to put a tent up or what happens on a camping holiday? Do you want to get outside and enjoy the outdoors? Maybe you are an experienced camper and love to help others. Whatever you ability or experience as a camper, The Great Aussie Campout is an event in October you cannot miss for fun, entertainment, friends and family time.

The Great Aussie Campout (GACO) will bring together thousands of Australians nationwide, to camp out for one night. You can camp at an organised event, in your backyard, a friend's property, campsite, beach etc. The fun will be endless and will give you the chance to experience a camping trip when you know there will be people around to help you out if you need it. If you organise your own campout, remember to register your own event so your numbers are counted.

The kids will learn new skills, connect with the outdoors (do not take any electronic devices!), they can help cook dinner, have a BBQ, toast marshmallows, drink hot chocolate around the camp fire whilst playing games and telling scary stories (you will know your children's limits with scary stories, you want this to be a positive, exciting adventure, not one they will be scared to repeat!) You could download an app that tells you what the constellations are and have a star gazing session. The options of things to do are limitless.

This could be a fabulous time to organise a school fundraiser. Pupils and their families can pay a small fee to camp in the school grounds and then enjoy the organised activities, such as a sausage sizzle for dinner, fairy floss and toasted marshmallows, a scavenger hunt etc. It will be great fun and a chance for families from the school to get to know each other.

When we have joined in with GACO, we stayed at organised campsites and participated in activities organised by the campsite. We did kayaking, orienteering and enjoyed a talk about the bush and information about animals you may encounter and how to deal with them. It's all about being in the outdoors, in the fresh air and connecting with nature.

There are so many benefits of being out in the fresh air. The biggest for parents will be that their children are actually out of their bedrooms and not looking at a device! That is worth its weight in gold!

So come on; get creative, get outside and enjoy this wonderful place that we live in! The date again is the 8th October 2016 - it's nationwide and for one night only!
