Make this a weekend to get out of suburbia
What a fascinating name - Grapes & Gallops! It is exactly what it signifies - wine and horse racing or as organisers put it "where equine meets wine"

The Mount Barker Co-Operative Ltd presents the Grapes & Gallops Festival, which combines country horse racing with a wine festival and features the $90,000 Mungerup Sprint.

And they're off!

There will be ten horse races on the day and excellent local wineries will be showcasing their award-winning wines. There will also be regional food on offer.

Great wine from a cooler climate

Make sure you get dressed up, find that stunning hat and come and try a glass of their prize-winning Riesling, accompanied with delicious local oysters!

Find your best hat and dress up!

More than 2000 people are expected to enjoy fine wine, fashion and racing at Grapes & Gallops at Frost Park on Sunday, 21st January, 2018.

So exciting - will I win?

There will be a big tent where racegoers can sample wines from five Mt Barker producers including the following:

West Cape Howe
Plantagenet Wines

They will also have great regional food such as:

Freshly shucked Albany oysters
Paella packed full of authentic Spanish flavours
Delicious wood-fired treats
The Whippy van man
Coffee to go

Great food, as well as wine

Grapes & Gallops is the biggest event on the Mount Barker Turf Club's calendar and this race day features a great country race programme, including the Great Southern's richest race, the Mungrup Stud Sprint, which is run over 1300 metres.

You can watch an interesting video of last year's event here:

Last year's event received comments like "What an awesome day! The weather and track were perfect, people came in their thousands and enjoyed themselves."

Mt Barker is a town on the Albany Highway and is in the Shire of Plantagenet. There are only about 2,700 people living there and it is about 360 kms from Perth and just 30 minutes from the beautiful coastal town of Albany.

Mt Barker is a well-known wine region and this cool sub-region is generally regarded as the most important sub-region of the Great Southern. The average temperatures and ripening months in the Mt Barker vineyards are significantly lower than in the Medoc and also lower than in the Bordeaux.

Make your bookings now; stay either in Mt Barker or Albany and have a weekend away from the drudgery of everyday life.

This will be a great family event in Mount Barker, with the entry cost being $20 for adults and $10 for concession holders.

It will be held on 21st January 2018 at the Frost Park Racecourse in McDonald Avenue, Mount Barker, and if you need any further information, you can phone 0481 112 559 or visit their website here.
