Located off the coast of Victor Harbor,
Granite Island Recreation Park is characterised by huge granite boulders tinged with orange lichen. Its spectacular coastal scenery, as well as the sound of crashing waves, provide the ultimate backdrop and soundtrack to your visit. On Saturdays the 13th and 20th of February 2021, you have the opportunity to join volunteer rangers for guided walks around this island.
Stroll over the 650-metre wooden causeway by the mainland and meet your guide under the big fig tree as you set foot on island soil. From there, you are in good hands. The hour long walk will lead you to discover the wildlife, geology and history of the island. You will also have time to explore some of the island's captivating sculptures. And, be sure to take in the views of Encounter Bay and The Bluff as you wander along.
Based on my experience
last year , I would have no hesitation in recommending this walk to you. Dawn, our volunteer ranger guide, was very knowledgeable and shared interesting insights into different aspects of the island. She was also particularly accommodating of the various age groups we had on the walk, from young children to elderly participants. Her friendly and cheerful demeanour made for a most enjoyable afternoon.
The ranger-guided walks do not incur a cost, however, bookings are required and can be done via the
National Parks and Wildlife Service website. Tickets may sell out quickly due to popularity, so reserving your spot as soon as possible is the way to go if you're interested.
