Bendigo is a rediscovered cultural centre in Victoria and has landed a coup with the Grace Kelly Style Icon exhibition at Bendigo Art Gallery. Grace Kelly was an American actress who met and married the Crown Prince of Monaco after a whirlwind courtship. A true fairytale story.
The collection at the Bendigo Gallery includes dresses, jewellery, hats and bags. Some pieces are replicas such as the wedding dress (the original of which is in a US museum and too fragile to travel) but most are the real deal including costumes from her time as a movie star in films such as "Rear Window" and "The Swan". The collection also includes pieces from her later years including Yves Saint Laurent, Chanel and Balenciaga dresses.
There are also newsreels and personal home movies playing giving an insight into her lifestyle in glamorous Monaco.
Ticketing is timed and can be purchased from the Capital Theatre adjoining the Gallery. If you can, book in advance. I went on a Monday and found myself waiting for two and a half hours for the next available session – it is very popular.
It took about an hour and a half to look at everything. This is not an exhibition suitable for young children and I would recommend this as a day out for people interested in practical glamour.
