'Following the Line' is an upcoming exhibition at Pepper Street Arts Centre showcasing a unique series of paintings and drawings inspired by 'Goyder's Line' - a boundary line across South Australia defining which areas are suitable for farming because of reliable rainfall and which land is only fit for pastoralism.'Goyder's Line' was created in response to the severe drought in South Australia in 1865 and is named after George Goyder, the Surveyor General at the time. This line is still recognised today.
The concept of a "line" passing through the interesting parts of the state intrigued artists Peter Wallfried and John Whitney, who decided to work together to create this exhibition. With this exhibition, Peter and John have followed the 'line' with the help of maps and information from the Royal Geographic Society of South Australia. The various works came to together after several extensive trips to areas along 'Goyder's Line' and painting and drawing 'en plain air'.
The end result is a detailed collection of works depicting farms, towns, historical sites and countryside on either side of the 'line'. For both artists, 'Goyder's Line' is still creating comment and controversy, as it had to be altered in the present day due to 'climate change'.This exhibition will be opened by Richard Fewster, President, Royal Agricultural & Horticultural Society of SA Inc on Friday 3 October, from 6 pm – 8 pm.Peter will then participate in an Artist's Talk event on Saturday 4 October, from 2 pm - 4 pm. Peter has enjoyed three successful solo exhibitions at Pepper Street Arts Centre, has had several SALA exhibitions, has won Art Prizes across the state, and has been shortlisted in the Fleurieu Biennale three times. The following weekend, John will participate in an Artist's Talk event on Saturday 11 October, from 2 pm - 4 pm. John has been working with South Australian schools and communities as an Artist in Residence for many years. He also draws prominent and historic buildings throughout the state through private commissions. This exhibition is free to attend and will run until Friday 24th of October, 2014.For more information on this exhibition, the artists and special events, please visit the Pepper Street Gallery website .
