The Tastiest Vegan Food On The Gold Coast
Vegan food has come a long way over the past decade, when meat-free dining options generally manifested as an uninspiring selection of bland curries and limp salads. Fortunately, the times have changed. These days, discerning foodies on the Gold Coast are discovering just how delicious a cruelty-free diet can be at the many awesome vegan-friendly eateries that are springing up from Coolangatta in the south to Southport, in the north. Located in the heart of Surfer's Paradise, one of the most popular of these establishments would definitely have to be Govinda's Restaurant.
Formally situated in the Centro Shopping Centre, a couple of years ago Govinda's moved to a fabulous new shop-front location on Surfer's Paradise Boulevard, where locals and visitors can now enjoy some of the best meat-free food on the coast. Whether you strictly eschew food derived from animal products or are simply after a tasty wholesome meal that won't break your budget, this restaurant's all-you-can-eat deal will be sure to keep you coming back for more.
Govinda's Restaurant is set up as a self-serve buffet, with a large bain-marie serving hot dishes on one side of the dining room and a fabulous salad bar, accompanied by a mouth-watering selection of home-made dressings, on the other. In my opinion, the salad bar is one of the best on the Gold Coast, and is definitely one of the main attractions for me. The variety changes daily but there is generally a choice of around six salads, ranging from simple fresh garden salads to pesto salads, quinoa salads, couscous salad and more.
The meal selection in the hot bain-marie is also comprehensive, encompassing traditional Indian fare such as rice, dahl and vegetable curries, to Asian tofu dishes, delicious pastas and other delicious wholesome fare. Not only tasting great, a meal at the restaurant is also terrific value, with the all-that-you-can-eat deal being just $15.00 at the time that this article was written.
And then there are the sweets. Some people willingly drive from the opposite side of the Gold Coast to savour mouth-watering desserts such as vegan halava (semolina pudding), cheese cakes, raw cakes, sago cups, cup cakes, slices and other delicacies that have been expertly whipped up by Govinda's talented team of cooks. Most of these can be found in the glass-fronted cabinet at the rear of the restaurant where the customer service counter is.

Another quirky little thing I love about Govinda's is the fact that a small corner of the restaurant sells traditional Indian wares such as jewellery, badges and miscellaneous other trinkets. If you love Indian handcrafts or need to buy a gift for a friend, this might be a good spot to check out.
In a nutshell, if you're looking for well-priced wholesome vegan food in the heart of the Gold Coast, make Govinda's Restaurant in Surfer's Paradise your first stop. Situated at Shop 6, 3120 Surfer's Paradise Boulevard, just five minute's walk from the heart of town, this friendly, laid-back establishment ticks all the right boxes.
