Being a fan of both Vegetarian and Indian cooking, I was eager to check out Govindas Pure Vegetarian Family Restaurant in Stones Corner.
Tucked away in the corner of Phoenix Market, next to the Stones Corner fruit shop, you wouldn't even know it was there unless you were looking for it.
Govindas was busy the day we visited, so obviously people do seek it out. And now, I know why.
This
Hare Krishna run restaurant serves up delicious, freshly cooked, Vegetarian Indian food - buffet style.
My husband and I both had the Basic Meal ($9): dhal (legume soup), basmati rice, mixed vegetable curry, a pappadam, and two koftas served with tomato chutney.
The all you can eat Feast Meal ($12.50) includes all of the above plus a green salad, dessert, and a drink.
If your kids like curry (it is mild), this family restaurant is an inexpensive lunch or dinner. Kids eat free (0-3), then $4 (3-5), and $6 (6-12). There is a box full of toys, a high-chair, and a couple of low tables with floor cushions to sit on.
Besides the low tables, there are a handful of tables inside and a few outside. The restaurant is tastefully decorated with images of Hindu deities, including
Krishna.
Govinda, another name for Krishna, can be translated as 'protector of cows'. Cows are sacred to Hindus which is why they embrace vegetarianism.
While you're enjoying your curry and chai tea, you can peruse their small selection of books including books on yoga, India, and vegetarian cooking.
Take-away is available. A large container costs $9. They also offer a catering service. Get Govindas to cook up some curries for your next get-together.
Although the Stones Corner location is reasonably new, Govindas is an institution in Brisbane. They have been serving Vegetarian Indian buffets in Brisbane for over twenty years. They have two other locations: West End and the City.
Govindas, at Stones Corner, is open Monday to Friday, from 9am until 8pm. Saturday's hours are 11am until 3pm.
Namaste.
