A rare glimpse
On Sunday 22nd February 2015, Government House will be open to the public. The doors are opened for public viewing only twice a year, so this is a fantastic opportunity to see inside the house, as well as wander around the stunning gardens.

The original Government House, a small 3 roomed thatched wood hut with calico ceilings, was destroyed by fire.

The stately home that we see today was designed by George Kingston and building works were started in 1838.

Adelaide's Government House is the oldest public building in South Australia and is State Heritage Listed. It's also one of the finest examples of Georgian architecture in SA.

Tours of the garden will be available and will run every 30 minutes.

During the Open Day, you'll see first hand the grand dining rooms, the Governors private office, the ballroom with stunning leadlight windows and see the magnificent portrait paintings some of Adelaide's historical namesakes.

Outside, in the gardens, there'll be displays and people dressed in period costumes. Last year there were some old fashioned outdoor games for the kids to try - like hopscotch!

The SA Police Band will be there in the morning and the Chicago Showband will be there in the afternoon.

Entry on the day is free, but bring a gold coin or 3. You can leave one at the gate and spend the rest on some yummy home made cupcakes - all proceeds from the day go to the Cancer Council's Relay for Life.

Sunday 22nd February

10am to 4pm

Suitable for:
All ages

Getting there:
The Adelaide train station is just a few steps away, as is the tram and the buses. Parking in the city is free (or very cheap) in the CBD on a Sunday

I went last year and really enjoyed meeting Kevin Scarce, a most gracious and courteous host, and viewing Government House. The on duty staff were most informative, helpful and interesting.

The Police Band will help pass the time while standing in the long queue to enter.

I missed the open day last year. So happy to hear that it's another open day coming soon! Thanks for sharing (& reminding)!
Just wonder if I'm allowed to bring my camera.
