This is so exciting! I'm sure you have all heard the very recent news regarding Brisbane Open House tours that are happening in October. Places of worship and heritage icons are amongst the awesome buildings that can be visited by the public during Brisbane Open House and Queensland's Government House in Paddington is one such building - a true heritage treasure.
Queensland's Government House is called Fernberg, which is German for 'distant mountain' and was named by its first owner and resident in 1864, MP Johann Heussler. Fernberg is a premier heritage home, with a story that is entangled within the history and people of Queensland.
Government House is not usually open to the public so this is a very special event, giving members of the public a unique opportunity to take a peek behind the doors of the Governor's official working residence and to explore this vast estate's majestic, heritage-listed gardens.
On Saturday the 13 October, His Excellency the Honourable Paul de Jersey AC and Mrs Kaye de Jersey will open their residence to the public between 10.00am and 4.15pm. As part of the Brisbane Open House event and tours, guided tours of both Government House and its very impressive gardens, will depart every fifteen minutes from the historic West Indian Cedar tree within the Government House grounds.
Plenty of room for the whole family and...then some
The guided tours will include the stately dining room, drawing room, investiture room and small sitting room - rooms that have hosted royalty. Enjoy the substantial art collection on display, which includes works on loan from the Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art and the Royal Collection Trust.
Visitors to Government House are permitted to take photos and videos around the Estate, with limited photography (no flash) being permitted inside Government House - staff will be on hand to give further photographic do's and dont's advice to tour participants.
Please BYO food and drink - NO alcohol - visitors won't be able to resist Fernberg's exquisite grounds - a fantastic excuse to have a family picnic.
Please note visitor parking is available on the streets in and around Government House, with restricted disabled access parking on site. The Vice-Regal dog, Gavel, will be on duty, so our furry family members will need to stay at home, unless they are assistance dogs.
