This Australia Day why not enjoy some of Australia's heritage with a visit to Fernberg House, home of the Governor in Queensland. The house, with it's beautiful gardens is heritage listed and plays an important role in Queensland's public life, hosting lunches and award ceremonies with the Governor.

The house, which is in the suburb of Paddington, was built in 1864/5 and was named Fernberg, which means distant mountain in German, by the owner Johann Heussler, merchant and later parliamentarian who lived in the house until 1872. Following this, it was owned by the Stevenson family, who made further extensions and installed the stained glass window of Robert the Bruce, King of Scotland from 1306 to 1329. After this the title transferred to a couple of mine owners who didn't live in the house, until in 1910 Governor Sir William MacGregor moved in as a temporary measure. Plans to build a new government house failed, and the house was purchased as the new Government House in 1911. Extensive work was required to bring the house up to an acceptable standard. Now the house has an extra wing and cottage added and it sits on fourteen hectares of beautifully landscaped gardens. For more information on the history of Government House, visit their Website .

Today the home plays host to a number of events on Queensland's Calendar. In addition to being the residence for the Governor, the house and grounds are used for Australian Honours Ceremonies, such as the awarding of Civic Bravery and Distinguished Service Medals. The Governor also hosts dinners and luncheons in the formal Dining Room which recognise those who serve the community, especially through voluntary endeavour as well as playing host to visiting trade and parliamentary dignitaries and the swearing in of Ministers.

A day at Government House includes guided tours through the house, gardens and bushland and musical entertainment. You may bring your own picnic to enjoy in the beautiful grounds or can purchase refreshments. Entry is free, with parking off-site at Norman Buchan Park. There will be a free Shuttle Bus from the Park up to Government House. As you enter, collect your ticket for the free guided tours from the Gatehouse and enjoy your day in this beautiful historic home which still plays a large part in Queensland's event calendar.
