Another open day at Government House in Adelaide is just around the corner - in fact on Sunday 8th October between 10 am and 4 pm.

If you haven't ventured past the front gates into the manicured gardens and viewed the stately interior of the oldest continuously used Government House in Australia, then this is your opportunity.

The free event, which is only on offer twice a year (usually in May and October) welcomes all on behalf of Her Excellency, the Governor, Frances Adamson and her husband Rod Bunten.

This particular open day is being run in conjunction with the Nature Festival in South Australia, which is being held between 1st October and 15th October.

Activities on the day, include the chance to make your own flower crown with supplied materials. For satisfying your creative streak, you can be part of creating a collective, temporary natural art piece, such as a mandala, using materials from the gardens of Government House.

Whilst on the theme of the Nature Festival, you can also construct your own lantern which can then be used as part of a lantern parade linked to an event called Light for the Bight , a family friendly celebration to support World Heritage protection for both the Nullarbor and the Great Australian Bight. This event will be held down at Semaphore Foreshore on Saturday 14th October between 6.30 pm and 9 pm.

If you enjoy gardens, there will be regular free garden tours held throughout the day, however ,you may wish to prefer to wander around on your own. You can view the beehives, where honey is then used in the kitchen of the Government House or see the Governor's Rose Garden, which features a stand of roses, celebrating each Governor in our State's history.

Whilst wandering the grounds, music will be provided by both the City of Adelaide and Woodville Concert Bands and you can even get upfront and personal with one of SA Police's horses.

Food and beverages will be on sale, from Grounds for Growth, run by clients of Novita's Transition to Work program, as well as Scouts SA.

Inside the house whilst moving between the jaw-dropping rooms such as the State Dining Room, Drawing Room, and the Ballroom, volunteer guides will be stationed around the house, to answer any of your questions relating to the history of the house, the artworks and other furniture and important pieces, as well as any vice-regal questions.

On display will also be recent gifts received by the Governor, and the uniform she wears in her capacity as Chief Scout of Scouts SA as well as Honorary Air Commodore of the Royal Australian Air Force - Number 24 (City of Adelaide) Squadron.

What's not to love about roaming through the grounds of Government House, with even an opportunity to perhaps shake hands with the Governor and have a photo taken with her!
