Located in the heart of Orchard Road, the Singapore Marriott Hotel is an excellent place to stay and enjoy the Christmas Light Up. This 5-star hotel has recently undergone renovation and upgrade of facilities including its restaurants. One of my favourite places for a gourmet brekkie when I'm passing through Singapore is the newly refurbished Marriott Cafe with an indoor and outdoor section.

From the crowds and queues, the Marriott Cafe is a definite favourite with locals for their international buffet lunch and Asian high tea. However most people are unaware of the equally generous spread that far surpasses the breakfast 5-star properties like Westin Melbourne and even Palazzo Versace on the Gold Coast.

At Marriott Cafe, the cooks whip up a continuous flow of hot and cold European items, pastries and Asian dishes at breakfast that mirror an international buffet lunch minus the seafood selection.

From the central open kitchen comes plates of crispy streaky bacon and grilled back bacon, grilled mushrooms, tomatoes, pork sausages and even small fillets of beef.

Try finding a brekkie in Australia and Europe that serves beef steaks. A separate station dishes up all kinds of eggs including omelettes with 3 typed of cheeses.

There's a pastry section with a wide range of danishes, doughnuts, breads, cereals and even desserts like sticky date pudding and bread pudding. However, one of my favourites is the buttery smell of freshly cooked batter and Marriott Cafe serves up thick slabs of the griddle cooked pancakes and crispy waffles that are fantastic with the accompaniment of more butter, maple syrup, cream and scoops of vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, coco mint or yam ice cream.

Fruits and freshly squeezed fruit juices are plentiful. Some of the tropical fruits include cut watermelon, honeydew, pineapple, dragonfruit, papaya as well as grapes, longans and blueberries.

The equally large selection of fruit juices also include the mix of tropical fruits and vegetables.

A salad and antipasti bar features an extensive variety of rocket, spinach, mixed salad vegetables with over 20 antipasti as accompaniments. Add to them a showcase of gourmet meats hanging on hooks that provide the assortment of shaved hams and salami along with smoked salmon, gravlax and at least 4 types of soft and hard cheese to complete any European brekkie. Then there's the Asian section with hot dishes like congee, noodles, Chinese vegetables and dim sum to complete the spread of this gourmet breakfast.

With so much happening on the stoves and serving trays of the Marriott Cafe, you are simply spoiled for choice. Like most hotels in Singapore, breakfast is served daily from 6am to 11am. Priced at SGD38 (excluding taxes) for adults and SGD18 (excluding taxes) for children, the spread of brekkie items is fair value for money. Additional discounts apply for Marriott Food and Beverage Card Holders.

Open kitchens always look so interesting. It's nice to see what's usually going on behind the scenes.
