Gotham Writers' Workshop
Free Classes for Aspiring Writers

Even Shakespeare, Poe and Oates had a little help when honing their writing skills. If you're an aspiring wordsmith, you needn't toil alone at your desk, waiting for a literary muse to ding you on the head.

Since 1993, the Gotham Writers' Workshop has offered some of the best private writing classes in New York City. Choose from their semester selections of fiction, poetry, non-fiction, humor, and travel writing. Take the class with an instructor or online. And if you're hesitant to invest the money, take advantage of their free preview seminars.

In the fall and spring, Gotham Writers' Workshop offers complimentary classes on a first-come first-serve basis. A generous cross-section of their classes is offered and instructors conduct the sessions as they would for matriculated students.

After the instructor introduces his/herself, the hour often begins with a writing exercise and several critiques of the work. Sixty minutes goes fast but careful notetakers will leave the classroom with invaluable information. Instructors are extremely candid about industry trends, writing requirements, and their contact information.

Registration is online, the staff is extremely organized and helpful, and the networking possibilities are limitless. During these preview days, attendees can sign up for two classes. At the conclusion of the seminars, Gotham usually emails participants with discounted rates for upcoming classes.
