For decades, people have taken part in book clubs where everyone reads the same book every month and meets up to discuss it, but in recent years, there has been a new trend. This is called a Silent Book Club. The Central Coast has its own Silent Book Club that meets once a month for three hours on a Saturday at Funhaus Factory on Donnison Street.

Silent Book Club is a global movement that has made it to the Central Coast and is perfect for readers who love to read, quiet company, and being cosy. It has 1,500 in 54 countries and is a chance for readers to get together in a shared space that is relaxed and has no pressure to read the same thing or to talk and socialise. It’s perfect for readers who don’t enjoy traditional book clubs with assigned reading and deadlines, nor pressure to have something to say.

For a Silent Book Club, take whatever you want to read or are reading in any format, settle in surrounded by like-minded people, and read, read, read.

Silent Book Club began in San Francisco in 2012, when two friends met to read in a quiet place together – and created a different space for reading that had no stress after they found that traditional book clubs didn’t work for them. It’s a great concept because being part of a traditional book club can be stressful, justifying a stance or not liking the chosen book or genre. And it is great to see it coming to Gosford.

It's the thing we all need - a BYO Book Club that is free to attend and lacks the shackles of reading the same thing as everyone else. It gives all readers a space to enjoy reading, or to get back into reading without judgment or pressure, and is probably much more relaxing than forcing yourself to read a book you really don’t like. The more people that come, the more this can continue and maybe it’ll expand to other venues, and we can keep the arts and reading alive!
