Maintained by SA Water,
is accessible to the public from 8:30am to 4:30pm every day. Visitors are welcome to come for a walk on the barrage or simply spend time relaxing in the garden. Facilities include a sheltered BBQ and picnic area as well as meticulously-maintained lawn with plenty of shade trees. Clean toilets are available onsite too.
Strolling across the barrage has always been a pleasant experience for me. This time round though, we happened to be there while the lock is in action. A bonus indeed! Boats are allowed to travel between the lower lakes and the Coorong.
The River Murray was as impressive as usual and its surrounds never seemed to disappoint. No seals were spotted, unfortunately, but I guess you can't have it all.
The barrage was constructed in 1940 to maintain a supply of fresh water in the river. Photos detailing its construction can be found under a gazebo in the garden. Definitely worth the visit if you have an interest in such things. Entry is free.
