I'd never say ''no to one of these
Jeff Goodieson was once a Master Brewer with a large and successful conglomerate, but his dream was always to have a small boutique brewery of his own. So, a few years ago, when he and his wife Mary and their young family settled in the McLaren Vale wine region, they decided to build a brewery in the backyard.
The rest is history, as today their small family business has become a real success story in this gourmet paradise. Jeff and Mary pride themselves on their use of traditional techniques and they use only natural ingredients without preservatives or additives. The awards have come as the business has grown and in 2012 Goodieson Brewery scooped the Royal Adelaide Beer Awards winning Champion South Australian Brewery and Champion Small Australian Brewery – an impressive result against the wealth of breweries in this country.
They have since followed this with numerous awards for their individual beers – of which there are now 7 in production at varying times. The malty, unfiltered Pale Ale is always a favourite, but the rich and dark Stout is an ideal winter refresher, while the Christmas Ale carries the spicy flavours of Christmas to complement the season's indulgences.
There is now a cellar door in the brewery, too – any day of the week you can call in and try all the beers on a tasting paddle or just linger over a glass of your favourite and shoot the breeze with Jeff or Mary. And funnily enough, if you ask a local winemaker what they drink off-duty, it's very often a palate cleansing Goodieson's!
