There are some things that are unique to Canberra: an irrationally emotive response to the question Northside or Southside; the knowledge that EPIC is both a place and an adjective; and being subject to strange cravings for Goodberry's Frozen Custard.
If you've never had the 'Goodberrys is the one' jingle stuck in your head, you need to question your Canberra credentials. It was that very song that lured me into Goodberry's for the first time. I visited the Belconnen store where the interior is a mix of lolly bright signage and pops of colour mixed with dark wood and old-style booth seating (and south siders don't miss out - there is a store in Erindale as well).
The menu at Goodberry's is surprisingly big for a dessert bar - you'll find a variety of concretes, sundaes, shakes and spiders, hot dogs and even frozen custard cakes to choose from. It was the frozen custard I had my sights set on and it really was amazing. The jingle describes the frozen custard as smooth and fresh, cool and creamy and it's fair to say that is honest and accurate marketing.
Available in either vanilla or chocolate, it's the creaminess that sets this aside from other ice creams. The Goodberry's website claims batches are made fresh hourly from natural ingredients - milk, fresh cream, eggs, pure cane sugar, honey and vanilla beans. The taste reminded me of desserts my nanna used to make: rich, indulgent and delicious. As well as the frozen custard itself, you can mix in lollies, nuts and fruit and cover it in toppings to create a dessert to remember.
So next time you need to satisfy your sweet tooth, Goodberry's will be ready and waiting to churn out a fresh batch of frozen custard just for you.
