New to Canberra, I love exploring this city and the secrets that it holds with my family.

Natural frozen custard topped with fudgy, gooey goodness
Goodberry's Frozen Custard is a popular dessert outlet in two locations in Canberra - Erindale in the south and Belconnen in the north. It is unusual to see a "frozen custard" outlet, compared to the many ice creameries around the region, however it is this point of difference that makes it so attractive to locals. This Canberra-owned company makes frozen custard from only the freshest, natural ingredients - whole milk, fresh cream, eggs, pure cane sugar, honey and vanilla beans. Also, as the custard is also made fresh in front of you when you order, there is no need for preservatives or stabilisers like other icecream venues.
For anyone who has allergies or intolerances for preservatives, this natural product is a way to enjoy "going out for an ice cream" without the side effects. The frozen custard tastes delicious - if you weren't told it was custard then you wouldn't know the difference. Of course what you choose to put on top of the frozen custard is up to you - if you don't have any intolerances then the choices are endless. Make up your own combination, or pick one of their decadent flavours and surprise your tastebuds this weekend.
On our family's visit to the Erindale Goodberry's on a Sunday afternoon, we were surprised by the number of people of all ages, who came pouring through the doors. Some locals had obviously been there before as they didn't need to look up at the menu and soon walked out with paper bags packed to the brim. Others, like us, stood gazing up at the menu for what seemed like forever, deciding between the delicious flavours available. There is a range of options to choose from including the popular Concretes - where you choose between vanilla or chocolate frozen custard then pick from a variety of toppings to get mixed in with it. They are called "Concretes", because if you turn them upside down they don't go anywhere! Do you like Oreos, Jaffa's, Gummy Bears, M&M's, Violet Crumble, Tiny Teddies, nuts or sprinkles? See here for all the sugary options available.
You can also order sundaes, spiders, milkshakes, low fat smoothies, iced coffees, coffee and even nacho's and hotdogs - see here for the full menu.

The Erindale Goodberry's store is set in an area of restaurants and takeaway food outlets in the suburb of Wanniassa. It doesn't look particularly large from the front, however inside there are three spacious booths down the side of the outlet, two large round booths by the front window and a few tables and chairs in between, so there is the opportunity to dine in. The simple décor, booth seating and family friendly atmosphere creates a real 1950's feeling at this old fashioned dessert outlet. Even the frozen custard itself is being made as it was decades ago - fresh, natural and full of ingredients that you actually know.
On a hot summer's day, if you are looking for somewhere to cool down in air conditioned comfort, then check out Goodberry's Frozen Custard at two handy locations across the city. Even in the winter months, it is a way to escape the chill outside and enjoy a Concrete or hot coffee in a cosy booth. It is also an ideal venue for dessert after dinner at a restaurant nearby, as it is open until 10pm between Sunday and Thursday and 11pm on Friday and Saturday nights. Of course there are other ice creameries across the city to choose from, however if you would like to support a Canberra-owned business with a difference, then give frozen custard a try.
Once you try this fudgy, gooey goodness, it won't be your last.
