A Fun Day Out In The Great Outdoors
With its scorching hot summers and sandy soil, gardening in Perth can be quite a challenge – to say the least. However, despite these formidable obstacles, local interest in creating beautiful productive gardens has never been higher - thanks to the efforts of high-profile celebrity gardeners and sustainability experts, and the myriad courses and magazines that are now so easily available. Coming up this weekend at Churchlands Senior High School, the Good2Grow Garden Fundraiser and Sustainability Market is an event that gardening enthusiasts definitely won't want to miss, with plenty of things to interest people of all ages – from the wannabe novice to the seasoned professional.

A fundraiser for Churchlands Senior High School, the goal of this event is to encourage a love for gardening amongst both the school's students and the wider community. The organisers wanted to create an event that students could actively get involved in, learn some practical skills and have a lot of fun working together. With great products to buy, interesting things to learn, music and food, it promises to be a great day out for the whole family.
If you've always wanted to create a worm farm but haven't known how to begin, Good2Grow is the place to be, and local expert Kim will be present to point you in the right direction. There will also be Carla, a permaculturist, who will demonstrate the skills involved in seed-saving, and Gary, who can help you solve any soil issues you may have.
Since Perth soil is so sandy, we all need to fertilise our gardens regularly to keep them healthy and happy, and seasoned gardener, Harrie, will also be at the fund-raiser with his much-lauded chicken litter fertiliser. This incredible product has been poetically described as 'chocolate for your garden', and was personally formulated by Harrie as an onsite composting system for chicken farms. With practically none of the smell generally associated with chicken manure, this fabulous fertiliser and soil conditioner has been dried and milled, and is ready for you to water into your garden. It can be used for practically anything, and is a must for any gardening connoisseur.
The market place will also be a great spot to head for with loads of cool earth-friendly products to purchase as well as heaps of helpful advice. The Mindarie Regional Council in conjunction with the City of Stirling, Town of Cambridge and Town of Vincent, who are supporting the event, are providing plenty of practical information, fun activities and native plants.
Peg from the Earthwise Community Centre in Subiaco will be there, assisting students with a swap / sell stall. There will also be a plant stall selling vegetable and herb seedlings, along with other garden goodies, as well as a cake stall, live music and much, much more.
In a nut-shell, if you want to learn a few new gardening tricks while helping a very worthy cause, this great fundraiser at the Churchlands Senior High School may be just what you're looking for. Taking place on Saturday, September 5th, the event will begin at 8.00am and continue until 2.00pm.
Churchlands Senior High School is situated at 20 Lucca Street in Churchlands.
