A beer that tastes like an Anzac biscuit? Are you for real?
Hands up if you know what 'cenosillicaphobia' is? Apparently it's the fear of an empty glass!* And in particular, fear of an empty beer glass.

There's no danger of anyone suffering cenosillicaphobia between the 17th and 25th of May 2014, as this is when Good Beer Week is taking place in Melbourne. (You will note that it's actually 'Good Beer 8 Days', but who's counting?) Featuring 200 events at over 160 participating venues, this is Australia's biggest annual celebration of the best of the local and international beer world. The events are as diverse as degustation, a scavenger hunt, beer masterclasses, and barbecues.

Information on all the Good Beer Week events can be found on the website, or you can pick up a program at your local BWS store. You can also buy tickets online.

One notable event during Good Beer Week is 'Beer Mimics Food', sponsored by the 4 Pines Brewing Company. For this event, two well known Australians have been tasked with creating a beer that is influenced by food flavours. Chef Andrew McConnell (Cutler & Co., Builders Arms Hotel, Cumulus Inc., Golden Fields) and comedian/larrikin Mick Molloy have each commissioned their own food-inspired beers. Happily, they're working alongside the knowledgable brewers at 4 Pines to develop these limited-edition beers.

In this, his Beer Mimics Food debut, Mick has taken inspiration from the humble Anzac Biscuit, in a blatant bid to get the popularity vote from Aussies and Kiwis alike. Mick's Anzac Biscuit Stout is made using New Zealand hops. It's described as: 'a full-bodied brew with a hint of oats, coconut and golden syrup; said to be both liberating and unifying'. Unifying? Hmmm. Mick assures potential tasters that the beer is 'big, bold and booming'.

"The Anzac Biscuit Stout combines two of my favourite things - biscuits and beer. It's a match made in drinking heaven. The brewing process was great to be part of. It's been a lifelong dream of mine to brew my own beer so I was like a mad scientist at 4 Pines," says Mick.

Andrew McConnell, a Beer Mimics Food veteran who dazzled beer-lovers with his Signature Relish Ale at last year's event, has concocted the Asian-inspired XO Sauce Ale for this year's offering. The blend of dried scallop, chilli and garlic with an ale may divide the masses, but McConnell believes the brew is a classy crowd-pleaser.

"XO sauce originated in Hong Kong and after living there for many years it became one of my favourite flavours. I love the sweet, savoury, umami qualities of the sauce which I think will pair really well with a good cold lager," said Andrew.

Come along and pass judgment on these 'inspired' drops at the Builders Arms Hotel located at 211 Gertrude Street, Fitzroy, from 6.00pm until late on Wednesday 21st May. Admission is free, but you will be up for the cost of the beers you drink.

(* admittedly, my research suggests the source for this is not necessarily reliable!)
