It is no secret that Ashfield is a diner's paradise most famous for Shanghainese cuisine. On any given night the streets of Ashfield are buzzing with people looking to quench an appetite.
I've lived in Ashfield long enough to come up with some favourite go-to restaurants that are quick, cheap and fail-proof for a hungry adult.

Here are my recommendations:

1. Xin Ping BBQ shop

This is hands down the best roast meat shop I've ever been to in all my time in Sydney. It's right next to the train station and easy to miss, but do not underestimate this little hole in the wall. The roast duck and soya sauce chicken are my favourites and I often do takeaways as there isn't much of an ambience to hang around and dine in.

Address: 10 Hercules Street, Ashfield

Price range: $10-$15 to feed two hungry adults (takeaway)

2. Manmaruya Japanese noodle bar**

Manmaruya's menu is extensive and offers ramen, udon, bento boxes, sushi and rice dishes complete with salad and miso soup on the side. The portions are pretty generous for the price you pay, and if you're not a Japanese food connoisseur then you'll find that the meals are of above average standard. Not bad for a restaurant that serves up a wide range of Japanese dishes.

Address:217 Liverpool Road, Ashfield

Price range: $10-$20 for mains, $2-$10 for side dishes
3. Sakura Sushi Train

Sakura is the place to go if you're craving for some good sushi. The chefs are Japanese and you can tell that they are authentic from the way they look, dress and behave.
Sakura is most famous for its sushi and sashimi but they also serve up bento boxes, hot pots and udon as alternatives.

I highly recommend the grilled scallop nigiri and grilled salmon nigiri.

Address:215 Liverpool Road, Ashfield
Phone: (02) 9799 0306
Price range: $3 -$8 for a plate of sushi/sashimi
4. New Shanghai

After its recent refurbishment New Shanghai is now a notch above all the other Shanghainese restaurants in Ashfield. Unlike its peers, the refurbishment did not warrant a price increase in the menu giving it a competitive edge above the rest.

The line to get a table can be a 20 minute wait given its recent surge in popularity but I'll say it's worth it. The soup dumplings are a must and my other recommendation is the sour and spicy soup for a little tang.

Address: 273 Liverpool Road, Ashfield
Phone: (02) 9797 7284
Price range: varies from $5 to $25
5. Tasty House Chinese Vietnamese

Tasty House was one of the first places I discovered in Ashfield and quickly became a favourite. They specialise in Vietnamese dishes such as pho and noodle soup but also offer some popular chinese dishes like fried rice, sweet and sour chicken/pork on rice and black bean chicken on rice. My ultimate go-to dish whenever I frequent this restaurant is the grilled pork rib on tomato rice or crispy chicken on tomato rice. It never disappoints.

Service is quick and the drinks/dessert menu is pretty mouth watering too.

Address: 297 Liverpool Road, Ashfield
Phone: (02) 9716 5668
Price range: $10-15 for mains
