Okay - I will admit it. I've fallen in love. It's going to be a problem I can tell. You see this weekend I found myself wondering around the Bend & Snap Market at Little Londsdale St. Call me shallow, but it was love at first sight. You see there it was I found a soul mate.
Golden Skull Candles: A regular guest at markets around Melbourne – their candles draw me in everytime, like a moth to a flame. Terrible pun intended.
Oh the smell. How many times have you heard that phrase and it actually means something good just happened? This is one of those rare times. Started by a New Zealander who is now a Melburnian these candles are the Sh#%. Sorry, but it's true.
It's one of those gifts that the receiver will love before they've un-wrapped it because the smell is so delicious. That's if you can resist saving it for yourself!
Here's what I look for when I buy candles.
1) Price – have you noticed candle prices have gotten WAY out of hand. Okay, it might be pretty, ok it might smell great, but you know what I'm burning it, BURNING it, it's not going to last forever, I can't pass it down to my grandkids as a family heirloom. Overpriced candles are an instant buzz kill. Golden Skull Candles start at around $15 and their candles are quite large. There's also always a discount section on the website where you can grab a bargain from as little as $10 on samples or left overs.
2) Packaging – I am a SUCKER for packaging. I love clean simple and pretty. What can I say, I'm easily pleased. Golden Skull candles are the perfect gift, that requires no wrapping, pretty on its own, pretty in your home.
3) Burn time – Burn baby burn. Here's what I love most. I burn candles a LOT...in every room....all the time. I love walking into my home and breathing in a beautiful scent. I only burn these candles in my home every second to third day. Why? Because their scent lingers. It's not sickly sweet or thick, but the delicious scent just seems to linger even when you aren't burning them. I've had my first candle since February and it's only dwindling down now – with VERY regular use.

Now let's quickly talk about the range. There is a big range. Even if candles arn't your thing they have a range of soaps and oils so they cater to everybody. They have Campfire & Caramel, Black Coffee,Vanilla Sin, Coco Creme, Rose, Summertime Sadness and Black Velvet. Each one is jsut as luxurious as the last. Also watch out for the range newbies like the ridiculously cool candy heart collection. Remember candy hearts? Pastel coloured sweet heart shaped lollies – now a candle that holds a fruity sweet scent and the remnants of your primary school crush.
Now to the more important question, how do you buy from someone that sells mainly online and in markets? Keep up to date. There's no point buying online until you've actually seen (and more importantly smelt) the range in person. Check the website and instagram to find out which markets they will be at next. I guarantee your nose, and wallet, won't be disappointed. Knowing you're supporting a local Melbourne business just makes it that much sweeter.
