The bar that feels like a 1920s opium den
The award winning bar, Golden Monkey, is found on the corner of Lonsdale Street and Hardware Lane within the Melbourne CBD and is a must for anyone looking for a great night out who isn't feeling like the club scene on that particular night. The excellent atmosphere and entertaining drink names are the first impressions that hit you after you make your way down a staircase covered in oriental comics.
The place uses a 1920s opium den in Shanghai as its theme. The entire place is covered in red and gold with dark and rich wooden furniture, giving the entire venue a brilliant atmosphere. The music is the standard you would find in a lounge, however those who appreciate jazz can find the Shoulin Funk playing from 9pm to 1am on Thursdays, Opium Jazz Tuesday Nights from 7:30pm to 11:30pm, as well as Shanghai'd on Saturday nights from 10pm to 4am for those who want to stay long into the night.
The bar staff are friendly and easy to talk to as they serve your drinks or while you're just standing at the bar. With cocktails ranging from $17 to $25 they are definitely worth their price. The selection is large enough to suit any taste but small enough so that anybody new to the scene can make a decision. Those who want good value for money should go in for a punch for four at $52 or $13 per person for about 2 to 3 drinks. For food they only serve small finger food between $5-$10 or large platters that start at $30.
Those looking for a superb night out should definitely check out the Golden Monkey
