History Should be Fun
To celebrate the 50th birthday of the Ipswich Historical Society, the Cooneana Heritage Cottage is hosting a community event with something for everyone.
As well as a Birthday cake, there will be a magician, children's activities, scrumptious food available all day, displays and stalls. Enjoy entertainment such as bush poets and stilt walkers, the Amberley Brass Band and my favourite: The Reverse Strip. Ladies from the Queensland Colonial Association will show just how many layers pioneer ladies used to wear.
Local historians will give talks throughout the day and the Genealogical Society will be there to answer questions.
Tour a furnished miner's cottage and see just how basic a miner's life was. Visit Cooneana Homestead which is currently being restored. This is a wonderful way to introduce children to Australian history - far more fun than dry history books... and more memorable.
As well as workshops for the children, a lantern parade and ghost stories there is a costume competition. You'd best go early so you don't miss anything.
