Freshly squeezed orange juice and a tasty tea
One of the joys of a weekend is the chance to take a drive through our glorious winter country-side and end up somewhere where we can have a 'nice cup of tea' a slice of something tasty and a chance to browse fresh produce.

In winter all the greenery that has been lurking just underground leaps out and the fields and paddocks look as if they have been freshly laid out with lawns.

As you drive up towards Chittering, the country-side rapidly turns European, small streams gurgle over stones and wend their way tortuously through ancient trees alongside the road.

Once in Lower Chittering on the right hand side lies the Golden Grove Orchard. This is the brainchild of Rocco and Connie Zampogna who bought a run down, neglected, citrus orchard in 1978. The orchard had been established some fifty years earlier in the Chittering Valley because of the rich soil, perfect for citrus.

The Zampognas very quickly opened the orchard to the public, adding a fresh fruit shop and a cafe, while adding groves of other citrus and converting to purely organic fertilizers. The orchard now boasts over 13,000 trees.

The farm stall (actually a vast shed) is open seven days a week and offers jams, jellies and wonderfully fresh, fruit that has barely travelled ten feet to the stall. The cafe is open weekends.

The cafe is rustic in style offering standard fare such as hot dogs or quiche ($4.50), hot chicken rolls ($8), as well as some superior chips ($6 for a basket) and a range of teas and coffees as well as glasses of their own freshly squeezed orange juice.

On the tourist trail and tour bus route the Golden Grove Orchard is a delightful stop off and well worth a visit and a browse. (The mandarins were particularly good).
