A Little Slice of the Orient in the Heart of Northbridge
Recently, as I was ambling along William Street in Northbridge, I stumbled across one of the cutest, quirkiest little shops that I've had the pleasure of encountering in ages. Golden Gates is an Asian retailer that looks as though it's been magically transported from the heart of Beijing to its present location here in Perth.
Specialising in a range of gifts and accessories, it's a great spot to head to if you're a fan of small atmospheric retail outlets, traditional Asian attire and art, or simply enjoy shopping somewhere totally different from the average generic chain-stores that we're surrounded with these days. If you've been trawling Perth for authentic hard-to-find items such as silk brocade cheong sans, ornately decorated paper fans or the little red and gold envelopes in which money is traditionally gifted in China, then this is the place to come. Other treasures waiting to be discovered here include exquisite Buddhist statues, traditional Feng Shui talismans, brightly-coloured silk slippers, sumptuous Chinese greeting cards, tea sets, waving cats, and traditional wall art and hangings. However, my favourite wares would have to be the gorgeous paper lantern decorations that adorn the shop's roof in the form of fish, abstract shapes, pineapples and even dragons: great conversation pieces and incredibly affordable decoration for the home or even a child's birthday party.
Apart from all the gorgeous goodies in stock, what I really love about Golden Gates is its humble unpretentious atmosphere. A genuine east-meet-west experience, the two ladies I spoke to during my visit were friendly, charming and more than happy for me to poke around through the store's colourful and eclectic wares. Situated in one of William Street's historic shopfronts, the customers were a mixture of local Asian folk, young art students and backpackers. As of yet it hasn't been over-run by hoards of hipsters, meaning that its ambiance is authentic and non-pretentious.
If you're a seeker of places and experiences that are truly out-of-the-ordinary then it's high time you visit Golden Gates. While the down-to-earth vibe is unique for such a quirky little shop, the goods that can be found here are truly special too: the sort of stuff that you definitely won't find at your average retail outlet.
Golden Gates doesn't have a website, so if you like the sound of what it offers, you'll have to get down there in person and check it out. The shop is situated at 314 William Street, in the heart of Northbridge. For more information, call 0405 287 558.
