Authentic Thai flavours find a home in Adelaide CBD

The new wonder child in Adelaide has arrived, Golden Boy is the Botanic Bar's new Thai venture, featuring acclaimed head chef, Nu Suandokmai, all the way from Sydney.

Golden Boy is at first glance a trendy new spot for an after work dinner, but upon further inspection is something really rather special. Never in Adelaide have I experienced such exciting flavours and such exceptional service.

The menu is designed to be shared and has a range of starters, sides, salads, stir-fries and curries that all scream to be picked. If you are the indecisive type or just want to put your trust in the hands of the chef, go for the Tuk-Tuk option.

With this option you can tell the staff what you do or don't like and for $48 they will bring you a sample of all the best that Golden Boy has to offer. We went down the Tuk-Tuk route and found that we were in very good hands. What was brought out took us on a guided tour through the flavours of Thailand, from Kingfish Sashimi to Egg-net Salad with Pork and Green Mango to Crispy Chilli Barramundi.

All were incredibly fresh with well-thought out flavours. Mint, chilli, coriander and lime were in courageous abundance but were all within balance of each other and exhibited exactly what Thai flavours are all about. The focus was on good quality produce, fantastic flavours and fresh ideas.

The service was also so good that when I went to the bathroom the waitress talked to my friend the whole time to keep her company. Seriously. They were attentive yet unobtrusive, which is a hard balance to get right in the restaurant business.

One of the ideas behind Golden Boy is that they want to fill the gap in the Adelaide scene of late-night dining. Every night that Golden Boy is open (Wed-Sun) their kitchen is open until midnight, so if you want to grab a bite to eat after your movie, now you can. Their head chef Nu Suandokmai has worked at some of the best restaurants in Australia, including Nu's Thai in Sydney and is now bringing his authentic Thai flavours to Adelaide.

Golden Boy also has a killer cocktail menu that keeps with the theme of fresh, and often soothing, flavours (if the chilli is a bit too much to handle). The Andaman Coast Cooler (pictured at the top) was a welcome accompaniment to the Chilli Barramundi, as was their Pimms cocktail jug. I really cannot recommend this place enough. I would advise to book a day or two in advance and to be adventurous with what you choose because everything is great. Never had sashimi? This is the perfect place to try it.

The Tuk-Tuk menu sounds like a good idea.
