If you want to make some family memories to treasure, the little village of Gold Creek Village is packed full of fun things to do. Most of the big ticket attractions are aimed squarely at families and there is plenty to choose from to keep the kids entertained and educated. This list includes five family activities plus a couple of snack stops guaranteed to keep the kids happy.
National Dinosaur Museum
If you have a budding palaeontologist in the family, head straight to the
National Dinosaur Museum . The museum has the perfect mix of education and fun with plenty of opportunities for a selfie with your favourite dino (some are interactive so be ready for some roars) and a shop full of fossils, gems and every kind of dinosaur merchandise you can imagine. Displays include murals, plants and fossils to bring the past to life in Canberra.
Canberra Reptile Zoo
The
Canberra Reptile Zoo started life as a reptile shop and has evolved to be a much loved Canberra institution. You can get hands-on with lizards and snakes, check out frogs and turtles and even come face to face with a crocodile. There's a play area outside and the venue also hosts kids parties for something different. You can also get started with your own pet set up with the well-stocked shop.
Cockington Green
Cockington Green is a strangely glorious place. Full of miniature replicas of English villages, tiny bucolic scenes and small-scale copies of famous buildings from across the globe, it has to be seen to be believed. There are three little trains running through, two are just to look at but one is big enough to catch a ride on. It winds across a bridge and through the village highlights. You can also admire the amazing gardens, a fairy grotto and enjoy a bite to eat at the Parson's Nose Cafe. If you love gardens or kitsch, get yourself here!
Canberra Walk In Aviary
Love birds? The
Canberra Walk In Aviary is home to loads of feathery friends just waiting to meet you. You'll get some apple slices and a container of mealworms to take into the 1000 square metre aviary which guarantees you'll have an armload of hungry birds in no time. They aren't shy so make sure you pack a camera for some pictures.
Mini Golf at Federation Square
If you've dreamed of hitting a hole in one or your family just loves some friendly competition,
Mini Golf at Federation Square has you covered. The tidy course is centrally located and has plenty of shaded areas and is suitable for all ages to enjoy.
As well as the Fantastic Five, here are a couple of bonus suggestions if you're after a sugar hit to power on your adventure:
Stripey Sundae
Stripey Sundae is an ice cream shop with a difference - the ice cream here is handmade locally! As well as traditional dairy-based ice cream, there are vegan and vegetarian ice creams and sorbets too. There's a huge selection of board games in the shop and a small kids play area to keep the littlest ones entertained. If ice cream isn't your thing, hot drinks are also available.
**The Lolly Shop
**
Have a sweet tooth or a case of nostalgia? The
Lolly Shop is the place - an old fashioned sweet shop which has a huge range of treats including old fashioned favourites, British, American and Dutch specialties and a big range of fudge and chocolates will satisfy even the biggest sugar craving.
