Interested in a tropical paradise for your next holiday? Look no further, as Australia's Gold Coast is bursting with sun, sand, and sea.
But the beach isn't the only thing that the Gold Coast succeeds in! With rainforests boarding the city, mountain ranges speckled within, and pristine swimming spots galore, you will think you have died and gone to holiday heaven.
While I do enjoy being an independent traveller, I discovered that my holiday to the Gold Coast was immensely improved by my decision to choose day tours instead of making my own way around. These tours showed me hidden gems of the area that I would have never found by myself while giving me enough time to explore each area in depth. Here are my tours I enjoy on my week-long holiday.
Whenever you visit a new place, it's always best to see all that the city has to offer, before venturing to the outer areas. The Gold Coast is known for its magnificent natural attractions lining the city's edges. But with all these incredible natural sights, a good deal of visitors forget to explore the dazzling city. I started off my Gold Coast adventure with a 1-day city tour, that showed not just the iconic city sights, but other areas nearby the city.
The day started bright and early, hopping on a deluxe bus to start the city journey. The bus weaved through the busy traffic, letting us out once we arrived at each of Gold Coast's highlights. The guide continued to talk in and out of the bus, informing us of the land's history and the significance of each sight.
After seeing all of what the city offers, the tour set off to Marlin Cove Marina. Spending the rest of the tour on board a cruise as it slowly sailed along the Broadwater. The tour visited many isolated islands, giving guests a try at fishing, throwing our bait into the shore to catch fish and yabbies. As well as feeding the local wildlife, including the heard of pelicans that dwell on Pelican Island. After feeding them, the tour feed us! Serving up a fresh seafood lunch on board the boat for a delicious meal with a view of the pristine waters.
After refuelling, the tour set out for one last adventure, showing us the beautiful region of Burleigh Heads. The area is famous for its laidback atmosphere and beach culture, and there is plenty of activities to choose from on the pristine shores. Make sure you bring your camera for this adventure as the sapphire waters and the city skyline is perfect for your first holiday Instagram post.
With many rainforest spots flooding the area, it's hard to know where to begin. Instead of trying my luck out alone, I joined the Natural Arch & Springbrook Tour. Springbrook National Park is one of Gold Coast's magical utopias. The lush expanse of forest is bursting with colour. Bright green flood the area, with reds, blues, and purples splattering the flowers blossoming within. The area stretches out 6,197-hectares and is chockfull with cascading waterfalls, spectacular lookouts, and unique wildlife. Pack your walking shoes for this adventure, as this one-day tour was filled with spirited activities and treasured sights.
First, let's find out where this attraction is! Springbrook is nestled within the ancient Gondwana rainforest, which is the largest subtropical rainforest in the entire world! It is the remaining vegetation of the pre-historic forest that sat on the supercontinent of Gondwana. It only takes around an hour to get to from the centre of the city, so sit back and enjoy the scenic drive of the lush foliage and picturesque views as you wind through the remarkable mountains.
During my tour, I saw exceptional attractions, including wildlife, waterfalls and an exceptional view of the Tweed Shield Volcano. However, all lessened in greatness after I spotted the famous Natural Arch Bridge. This picturesque rock formation is founded within bright green foliage, only reachable by the walking tracks weaving through the trees. A trickling waterfall drips over the rock formation all within a basalt cave, giving a tranquil atmosphere of this natural wonder. The rock has been naturally moulded into an arch structure after millions of years of erosion. The beginning of this formation started with the eruption of Mt Warning 23 million years ago. The volcanic eruption caused layers of volcanic rock to form in the area, creating a flowing stream of water to head through the Niminbah Valley to finally dropping over a ledge to form a waterfall. Over time, layers of volcanic rock at the base of the waterfall were cut away by the ongoing flow of the water. During this period a deep pool formed at the top of the waterfall which eroded through the rock to form a hole into the cave below.
Instead of spending the night at a crowded bar or a fancy restaurant, why not enjoy an unforgettable experience amid a tropical rainforest? The rainforest is a popular tourist attraction in the day but at night not many people know it is just as exciting. With many of the magnificent creatures that sleep through the day, now roaming the area for anyone to spot. Gold Coast's Hinterlands has one of these incredible creatures, found in Springbrook National Park amidst the majestic mountains. Home to one of the largest concentrations of Australian glow worms.
These glow worms are in fact, not worms at all, but a type of larvae of the fungus gnat fly. The adult fly resembles a large mosquito in appearance, but it spends a large percentage of its life in larvae state, resembling a small caterpillar. The true fascination with these larvae is their ability to produce a natural blue/green light. This is done by a chemical reaction within their body. A waste product, an enzyme, an energy molecule as well as oxygen reacts together to produce the natural light at the end of their bodies. The worms use this light to attract their prey, memorising small insects with the light much like a bug light.
This glow worm evening tour will take you through the thick rainforest until you reach a set of caves that these creatures call home. Once you step inside the darkness you will be mesmerised by the glow worms twinkling above you along the cave ceiling. Discover more about these fascinating creatures as you travel on the nocturnal tours as the guides lead you through this evening wonderland. After wandering through the caves, the tour will guide you through the rainforest sharing information about the eco-system living within. Keep your eyes peeled to spot some nocturnal animals that might pass by you. Finishing off at Goomoolahra falls to see the spectacular thunder of water cascading down the clifftop.
