An area of almost three hectares of land was donated to the
Gold Coast City Council by John and Essie Rosser in 1969. The Council decided that the land, now known as
Rosser Park , would be developed into the Gold Coast Regional Botanic Gardens. Originally the Gold Coast Garden Club planted forty trees and erected a plaque on
Arbor Day and this tradition was continued each Arbor Day for a period of time.
Between 1992 and 1998, $2.6M was spent on earthworks, deepening the lake and improving the waterbird habitat in the gardens.
With the support of
Gold Coast Branch of the
Australian Institute of Horticulture and the
Gold Coast Branch of Society for Growing Australian Plants , Kate Heffernan founded
Friends of the Gold Coast Regional Botanic Gardens in 1998. From this day on, Friends have grown from strength to strength providing not only a beautiful garden for visitors but also offer guided tours, school holiday education for children aged from four to twelve, plant sales, propagation and growing of plants. Friends also maintain an Herbarium for the Gardens, which is a collection of all plant specimens in the
Gold Coast Botanic Gardens and also for South East Queensland.
On Sunday 29th May, the Gold Coast Regional Botanic Gardens will be holding a free open day. This day is being run in conjunction with the inaugural
Australia and
New Zealand Botanic Gardens Open Day where more than fifty gardens throughout both countries will be showcasing the vital work they do for plant conversation.
The day at the Gold Coast Gardens begins with community planting at 10.00am. Throughout the day visitors can enjoy demonstrations on plant propagation and flower arrangements. There will also be sales of regional plants, herbs, some flower arrangements, displays and stalls. As well as guided walks and the Herbarium will be open for tours and display. Music will commence at 12.00 noon with a sausage sizzle, sandwiches, cool drinks, tea, coffee and organic treats available for purchase. There will also be plenty of Friends around to answer any questions you may have.
After the day, you may wish to become a
member of Friends where you can reap many benefits just by sharing interests with like-minded people. You will also broaden your learning with new skills, have access to the reference library at the Friends Centre, receive discount on merchandise and plants and receive early notification of presentations and workshops. More information about becoming a member of Friends can be located on their website.
Donations are also welcome.
This looks like a day not to be missed for any avid gardener and you will certainly be privy to some excellent tips for your garden at home.
