Nothing beats a good book. Holding a hard copy is still the preference for many but our busy lives can get between us and the next great read. Visiting the library regularly may not always be possible but thankfully there's a new express option now available on the Gold Coast.

Gold Coast Libraries offer an innovative way to access books for borrowing. Think drinks vending machine but stocked with books, not cool drink cans. Library kiosks have recently been introduced in Sports and Community Centres in 6 locations across the Gold Coast and contain a range of new and popular titles for borrowing. It's a self-service facility, with daily pick-ups and deliveries to keep the kiosk reading material varied and fresh.

The machine is easy to use. Simply scan your library membership card and the door glides open, giving you access to the collection of books, which are a mix of both fiction and non-fiction. When finished making your selection, push the button to close the door and the items will be checked out to your account. When you are ready to return the books, drop them in the Returns slot at any of the kiosk locations or any of the Gold Coast library branches. The whole process couldn't be easier and is designed to give members more borrowing options, on those days you just can't quite make it to the library.

You can borrow and return at each kiosk. Click on the links for opening hours and details . Note that Holds are not sent out to the kiosks – pop into your local branch library to collect those requested books. If you are not yet a library member, you will need to call your local library first and join. If you download the My Library App then you can access the kiosks without carrying the actual card, as you can display it on your phone screen for scanning.

So where are these magical Aladdin's caves of the book world? Current locations can be found in:

Carrara – Gold Coast Sports & Leisure Centre (296 Broadbeach Road)
Coomera – Coomera Indoor Sports Centre (35 Beattie Road)
Labrador – Labrador Community Centre (57 Billington Street)
Ormeau – Ormeau Community Centre (3 Cuthbert Drive)
Palm Beach – Eleventh Avenue Community Space (Eleventh Avenue)
Varsity Lakes – Varsity Lakes Sports House (37 Christine Ave)

If getting to the library, whether it be a branch or kiosk, is still a bridge too far for now, then don't give up, as the eLibrary online collection is available 24/7 and you can access it with a temporary online-only membership. More info on the huge range of online content and services can be found here .

Hopefully, this is just the beginning for the . Who knows where we might find them in the future. The idea of borrowing a book at the train station for a journey to Brisbane and back or in the shopping centre, as you shoot through on the weekly shop, is pretty cool. Just imagine the possibilities!

If you have a location idea for a future kiosk setting, please share in the comments box below.
