I have been on the Gold Coast for one year and in that time I have attended some awesome events, the majority of which are totally free to attend. Throughout the year up and down the coast there are a host of events offering everything you could wish for including sports, cars, markets, street entertainment, films, fun for the kids, surfing, music and more.

Here are my must see events coming up in 2013.

Magic Millions Raceday - BMW Magic Millions Race Day is held at the Gold Coast Turf Club each year is now recognised as Queensland's biggest thoroughbred racing event. With more than just racing and betting - it combines fashion, music, socialising and more.

Big Day Out Festival - One of the biggest music festivals which kicks off in Sydney on Friday 18 January, then heads to the Gold Coast on Sunday 20 January. The headliners this year are the amazing Red Hot Chilli Peppers and The Killers.

Burleigh Breaka Pro - The Breaka Burleigh Pro is an ASP (Association of Surfing Professionals) 4-Star rated World Tour event, which is held in the beautiful Burleigh Heads. The atmosphere is incredible and it was my first surfing event here on the Gold Coast.

Quiksilver Pro & Roxy Pro - This is a major free surfing event which attracts surf fans from all over Australia. Held at Snapper Rocks in Coolangatta is it a jampacked event with loads of people soaking up the sun, sand and surf with live music, stalls and games. I saw Kelly Slater surf here last year which was incredible, even I know who he is, and I witnessed some amazing surfing.

Surfers Paradise Festival - A really cute festival which is free to attend and runs over four weekends with different stalls, markets, street performers, art, culture, kids games, music, craft, interactive exhibitions, events and fireworks and much more. Plus you get to soak up the relaxed vibe of Surfers Paradise which has loads of shopping, entertainment, restaurants and cafes.

Gold Coast Film Festival - This year presented by Pacific Fair Shopping Centre, this offers loads of special screenings and events and pretty much everything to do with film, including some very special stars of the big screen.

Blues on Broadbeach - A world class music festival which is completely free that brings together Blues lovers from all over the world. There are 50 incredible blues artists all playing a variety of music for different tastes over around 15-20 different stages and venues.

Gold Coast International Boat Show - Bringing together the very best of the boating industry to showcase the latest products and developments on a local, national and international stage. All set in the glorious Sanctuary Cove - one of my favourite places on the Gold Coast.

Cooly Rocks On - A rock 'n' roll and nostalgia car festival that combines all things rock, rockabilly and swing. Over 50 big names play with loads of retro markets, free entertainment, workshops and parades.

Broadbeach Country Music Festival - Bought to you by the same team as Blues and Jazz Festivals in Broadbeach. Featuring local, Australian and International artists this is a free event with tonnes of live music to suit all tastes - now where did I put my Stetson?

Gold Coast Airport Marathon - One of the countries leading marathons which is set to motivate and challenge more than 23,000 people of all ages and abilities. There is a Marathon, a Half Marathon, a 10km Run, a 5km Challenge and Junior Dash races for the kids.

Broadbeach Jazz Festival - An excellent fun and totally free festival offering the finest jazz artists performing across outdoor stages and in venues throughout Broadbeach. I really enjoyed this festival - wonderful vibe and loads of people having fun and getting together.

Swell Sculpture Festival - A free and totally stunning festival featuring 50 weird and wonderful sculptures built by artists from Australia and overseas. There are also twilight walks, informative artist talks, classes and workshops.

Armor All Gold Coast 600 - Race by day and Rock all night. Twenty eight of motorsport's biggest international names join forces with V8 racing stars for this exciting event through the streets of Surfers Paradise. Some big names in rock light up the stage at night - this years headliner was Good Charlotte.
