Unearth your inner Goddess

Workshop facilitator, speaker and writer, SzeWing Yip-Vetault, could almost be a Goddess herself. Confident, poised and insightful, she delivers her workshop in radiant, soft-spoken tones that nonetheless hint at her corporate background in economics. Her positivity and enthusiasm are infectious without being patronising. She's also beautiful.

Accommodated within the nurturing atmosphere of the Life and Balance Centre, Glebe, I'm sitting in a circle with about ten other women. After introductions and a goodies bag that includes five Goddess cards, a yummy neroli spray and other female-friendly items, SzeWing (pronounced C-Wing), launches into her spiel.

When women get together magical things happen," she says. "I like to remind women it's important to take time for self-care." In the sense that many of us need a reminder of this, and of the power of female relationships, we're off to a good start.

To get us in the mode for self-reflection, there's a brief meditation, spliced enchantingly with the wailing of a singing bowl, played by SzeWing. We're encouraged to visualize a garden as a safe and special space we can always come back to. All too soon the meditation is over. Almost unwillingly, I focus back on the room.

SzeWing uses the singing bowl creatively.

SzeWing draws on the teachings of Josef Campbell and Jung and sprinkles her discussion with helpful quotes.

Transforming Campbell's 'hero journey' into a female-centred one, she discusses the 'heroine's' journey using ancient Goddesses as archetypes and role models; a thing she's passionate about.

"Archetypes are like a power pattern," she explains. "Goddess archetypes are less dry and more rounded than typical archetypes - like the warrior." In essence, Goddesses make psychology more fun and embrace feminine power rather than imitating the male. Goodbye padded shoulder power jackets. Bring on the lipstick and ravishingly long hair. Who better to serve us as role models than the Goddesses. With their complex human flaws and talents, capacity to suffer and strong sense of destiny and purpose they illustrate the highs and lows of human nature in a more realistic sense.

Organised and in control at all times, SzeWing also uses key musical sounds in a background CD as cues to move on. It's this duality of the esoteric and the practical that personifies her approach.

The workshop includes a chakra balancing meditation provided by a colleague, a detailed analysis of five Greek Goddesses including Artemis and Aphrodite, and a circle discussion. It's particularly the latter that animates the participants. Women like to talk.

Always keeping the personal discussion from straying for any length, SzeWing manages to be both compassionate and punchy in her responses and you gain the impression she'd be a worthy therapist. In fact, Sze-Wing is a life coach and Angel Therapy Practitioner, and trained in hypnosis, past life regression and reconnective healing.

When I admit to feeling torn and inadequate in my dual role of mother and writer, she tells me quite strongly to be proud of what I've achieved. "Honour yourself, and love who you are." We don't have to be good at everything, she explains (phew!). In my case, my self-perceived inadequacy was my abhorrence for baking cakes, making school lunches, cleaning messy kids bedrooms and other tasks associated with the domestic world.

Part philosophy, lecture and interactive discussion, the workshop gives food for thought, space for self-reflection, and is empowering to women in all walks of life. SzeWing says her goal is to encourage women to tap into their inner wisdom and divine feminine energy to become who they are inspired to be; to draw out the beauty and potentials in people; and to help them fully express their gifts and create a life they truly want.

Sze-Wing's greatest strength lies in her ability to create a nurturing environment that encourages openness and for strangers to be supportive to one another.

Though it's not possible to achieve too much in a five to six-hour workshop, there's a sense we're all going away with a seed of wisdom or nudge along our path we might not have had otherwise. "Life has a way to help you to grow," she says. "It's not about the length of the life but about the depth."
