Tanunda is a large rural town in the Barossa Valley, located about 70kms from Adelaide. A beautiful town with leafy streets and surrounded by vineyards with many well-known wineries, it is a popular tourist destination.

We have been to Tanunda many times but not until recently, while doing the Barossa Vintage Festival Scarecrow Trail , did we discover a significant historic site called , also known as "Der Zeigenmarkt". The Square is located at the corner of John and Maria Streets, one block west of the town's main Murray Street.

On 30 May 1842, Charles Flaxman was granted the land and he laid the one-acre allotment in English village form with a small square () as the town's centre. The early pioneers used the Square as a meeting place as well as for bartering of goods. Hotels, businesses and a Post Office were also established in the allotment. He named the township Tanunda, an aboriginal word which means either 'a watering hole' or 'many birds on a creek'.

Today the Square resembles more like a park with beautiful lawns, trees and garden seats at each intersection. There is a plaque in honour of Charles Flaxman, a stone sculpture and a metal sculpture with a goat's head on four sides.

On each side of the Square are three heritage stone cottages built in the 1840s. Next time you are in Tanunda, make a point to see this unique historical landmark.
