I am an academic and writer living in Melbourne. I love to travel and I also love writing about all the things Melbourne, regional Victoria and other parts of Australia have to offer.
Delicious Italian gnocchi enjoyed at Pizzini winery
Italian Gnocchi are the ultimate comfort food, light, fluffy and a showpiece for the many sauces they can be served with. So to have a whole weekend dedicated to gnocchi, wine, music and Italian merriment is heaven for the stomach and soul, especially for those who consider themselves Italophiles. Besides gnocchi served with a choice of 3 sauces, there will be other Italian treats served, such as homemade lasagna, ossobucco, calamari and different types of salami and terrines. There is even a smoked chicken salad with quinoa and also gluten free and vegetarian options.
As a well known award-winning winery, Pizzini will be sure to serve a great choice of wines, whether it be their new release crisp white or one of their red Italian grape varieties such as Sangoviese and Nebbiolo. If you have never been to Pizzini Winery in the King Valley then here is a great opportunity to explore this area, take a walk through the vineyard and maybe consider doing a cooking class sometime in the future.
The A Tavola cooking classes are run by the lovely and always patient Katrina Pizzini, and vary from dinner party fare to pasta and gnocchi classes. The gnocchi you will taste at the Carnevale will no doubt inspire you to try your hand at these delicious, light,melt-in-your- mouth potato clouds. Katrina and her team of helpers spend the day and night before the Carnevale making lots and lots of gnocchi by hand. The potatoes are grown on the property and many other foods which will be served are all local produce. The whole Pizzini family, starting with the grandparents who emigrated to Australia many years ago, to Katrina, her husband Fred, their children and grandchildren, embody the true Italian spirit of sharing food and wine with friends, old and new.

Besides food there will be children's activities including a giant sandpit, roving circus entertainers, giant Jenga and Connect Four, kite making and face panting. Italian music and a roving gypsy jazz band will provide the entertainment as you enjoy the food and will make you think you have escaped to a small part of another world. What a great way to spend a weekend.
The Gnocchi Carnevale is part of the La Dolce Vita King Valley Festival which takes place over the weekend of November 19-20th and gives you a chance to explore the area of the King Valley and its beautiful landscape and other wineries.
