This unassuming little café near the busy intersection of Walcott and Beaufort Streets in Mt Lawley seems to have a secret identity. By day, it is a casual breakfast and lunch café, where the dark wooden floor and wicker chairs make you feel like you are in an old-style tropical room; however by night, it becomes a modern little restaurant dedicated to serving local WA produce.

This split identity seems to be the new thing in Perth.

We were there for breakfast, along with a number of business people and shoppers. If there was one downside to the area, it is the difficulty in getting a car park since the intersection can be so busy. If you can solve that problem, then the next is choosing something to order.

There is a very large selection of vegetarian dishes on the breakfast menu, but they are all so tasty, you don't really miss the meat. Mushies on toast ($14.50) and tomatoes on toast ($14.50) are essentially the same dish, both served with crusty toast, creamy Persian feta, fresh rocket and balsamic vinegar. However the mushrooms have been roasted with garlic and rosemary and the cherry tomatoes roasted with garlic. How to choose?

The vegetarian breakfast ($19) comes with avocado, eggs, tomato, hashbrown, spinach and toast. Eggs Hemingway ($17.50) come with free range poached eggs, spinach, leg ham and hollandaise on an English muffin.

I loved the option of 'trio of crostini' ($14.50) which solved my problem of whether to have the tomatoes or mushrooms. It comes with three pieces of crusty toast, one with fresh, smashed avocado, one with the rosemary mushrooms, and the last with cherry tomato salsa. It came with lashing of fresh rocket and the creamiest feta. It was fresh, piquant and felt very healthy.

My daughter ordered the buttermilk pancakes ($14.50) and her first impression was 'those are the fattest pancakes I have ever seen'. Indeed. Three fat, pancakes each the size of a large mug came dusted with icing sugar, sitting in a puddle of maple syrup and accompanied by a generous dish of yoghurt and berries. Needless to say there were pancakes to take home.

There is a small but mighty cake cabinet and there was a regular trade in takeaway coffees. Open for lunch daily, the Globe is also open for dinner from Wednesday to Saturday, and gathering from their website, they are proud to announce they are under new management and making lots of changes.

If you have small children, don't be afraid to ask for a high chair (it's out the back) but don't forget it's on a busy street and it is a very small restaurant.
